According to Ayurveda, the basic physiological units that govern various functions in the body are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

Ayurvedic treatment includes the use of drugs, diet, lifestyle changes, Shamana (the use of Ayurvedic medicines), and Panchakarma (treatment involving five purification methods to eliminate the aggravated doshas).
