Faculty of Ayurveda Institute Of Medical Sciences BHU is a well-known Government Ayurvedic institution in Uttar Pradesh. The College is also known as the BHU Varanasi Faculty of Ayurveda. Banaras Hindu University’s medical education began in 1920, with the establishment of the Department of Ayurveda under the Faculty of Oriental Learning and Theology (1922-1927). The College is affiliated with Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi and is recognized by the National Commission for Indian System Of Medicine- NCISM.
Ayurvedic Aushadhalaya was founded in 1924-25 to prepare medicines, teach Ayurvedic students the formulations, and make the Ayurvedic formulations available to the general public at an affordable price. To aid in this arrangement, a large Botanical Garden was established for raw materials, which is still in use today.
Years later, in 1960, the Ayurvedic College was renamed the College of Medical Sciences, and Professor K.N. Uduppaa was appointed as its founding principal. The College of Medical Sciences had ten departments at the time, nine in modern medicine and one in Indian medicine.
The Ayurvedic Faculty is well-known for combining ancient Indian medical knowledge with modern medical sciences. The Faculty is close to other Faculties, including Humanities, Social Sciences, Technology, and Agricultural Sciences institutes. The interaction, interdisciplinary research, education, and patient care between the Institute’s departments and centres all contribute to the integration of Ayurveda and Modern Medicine. This has also aided in the advancement of collaborative research.
The history of medical education in Varanasi, the world’s oldest living city and India’s cultural capital, dates back at least 2500 years. Around the 5th century B.C., the great Indian Surgeon Sushruta lived and practised medicine and surgery here, as well as compiling his treatise, the Sushruta Samhita. Given this viewpoint, it was only natural for medical education to become one of the priorities of the then-developing Banaras Hindu University in the 1920s. The illustrious founder of Banaras Hindu University, Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya, had the vision of integrating the best of Ayurvedic and modern medical systems.
